In 1860 US Census (roll M653_106), Alachua Co., Florida, Division 17, p. 75 - Gainesville Post Office, there is a John Clowney, age 27, alone in HN 575/FN585, born in Ireland, working as an overseer, with personal estate of $1600. Neighbors include: HN 574 James A. Clark from SC, HN 576 Robt Andrew from Ireland, and HN 577 Ephraim N. Lyles from SC (who was on p. 427 in HN 211 of Fairfield Co. 1850 census). Family lore has it that John Clowney Jr. returned from Florida to fight for South Carolina during the Civil War, and was killed in battle. |
