John Clowney, second wife, and 6 sons emigrated from County Down, Ireland to the United States, arriving about Dec 1838 when youngest son Robert Cheyne Clowney was about 6 mo old - - per his grand-daughter, Lizzie Clowney Coleman.

John Clowney may have been a grocer, based on Papers of Administration of his estate, indicating he possessed "stock in trade composed chiefly of liquor & groceries ".

To John J. Pratt Esquire Ordinary for Union District-
The humble petition of Joseph Clowney and Moses Clowney herewith that their late father John Clowney departed this life intestate on the __ day of March Instant leaving a widow Nancy Clowney and seven children to-wit your petitioners and Mary Cunningham who has intermarried with James Cunningham and John Clowney, William J. Clowney, Samuel Clowney and Robert Clowney.

That at the time of his death he was possessed of a small personal estate consisting of some stock household & kitchen furniture (...) and some stock in trade composed chiefly of liquor & groceries and it is necessary for an administration to be had on his estate.
Your petitioners therefore pray that administration be granted them on the personal estate of their father John Clowney based on the usual terms and condiitons.

"Samuel Clowney of Union SC is my gggg grand-father.I have his will. Notes on the bottom include marked graves in Fairforest Presbyterian churchyard. John Clowney d. Mar. 4th 1848, age 57 years. Do not know if the last two John Clowney and Hugh Means are connected or an Archibald Clowney who died April 4th,1776. Samuel Clowney administrated on the estate but there were no papers to prove family or location. Recorded in box 2, pkt.15,Union C. court House. Elmer"

Note: Fairforest Cemetery is located 34-34.858 N, 81-44.802 W, just south of the county line in Union Co., South Carolina.
John Clowney is buried to the left of entry gate of the cemetery. His daughter Mary Cunningham is buried just to the right of the entry gate.

Text: Children of John Clowney (first to America in 1838). We came from the first wife, who died in Ireland.
Anna Boyd was the 2nd wife, who came to America with family - namely:
1. Joseph Clowney, md. Jeanette Stevenson
2. Moses Clowney, md. Susannah Elizabeth Yongue Milling, (nee Yongue, a widow)
3. John Clowney, md. a school teacher from N.C. He was killed in War between the States. His body was never found. She went back to N.C.
4. Mary Clowney, md. James Cunningham and came to Union District (County) before the others came over.
5. William James Clowney, md. Margaret Colvin. Most of his family moved down state.
6. Samuel Boyd Clowney, md. Margaret MIlling. Had 2 sons and moved to Dallas Texas -- S.B. Jr. and David Milling Clowney
7. Robert Cheyne Clowney, md. Margaret Brice, cousin Lizzie's father
