Notes: Meletha Ellen Shute was married first to James Alexander Threatt (who died between 1865 when his last son, Henry A. Threatt was born, and about 1868 when Meletha's son Marion C. Carnes was born), and second to John Wesley Carnes, by whom she bore at least 4 children who survived to the 1880 census.

She and her second husband were mentioned in the 17th article in the will of Thomas Threatt (1809-1892): "I give and bequeath unto my daughter-in-law Ellen Carnes fifty ($50.oo) dollars and if she should be dead at the time of my decease then the sum of fifty dollars should be paid to John W. Carnes." He also listed in his will the surviving 3 children that she had with his son, James Alexander Threatt: J(ohn) Raymond Threatt, Henry A(lexander) Threatt, and Martha (Threatt) Carnes.

Old Tabernacle Resident Passes
Mrs. Ellen Carnes Who Died Was One of the Oldest County Residents
Mrs. Ellen Carnes, on of the old and respected residents of the Tabernacle community died on Friday after a long illness. She suffered a fractured hip several weeks ago and from the effects of this accident and the infirmities of old age she passed away on Friday. Although practically blind for the past twenty years she was able to attend to her house work until the last few years. Having been born in 1839 Mrs. Carnes was one of the oldest residents of Lancaster county and had she lived until March 18 she would have been 94 years of age.
Mrs. Carnes had a wide circle of friends and was loved by all who knew her. She was born in the Tabernacle section of the county and with the exception of a few years lived there all her days.
Deceased was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Shute. She was twice married, the first time to Alexander Threatt. To this union were born three children, they being Mrs. Martha Carnes of Fort Mill, Raymond and Henry Threatt of this county. Her second husband was John W. Carnes and they left the following children: S. M. and C. M. Carnes of Arcola, Miss., Mrs. J.
M. Stewart of Camden, Mrs. W. B. Carnes of Columbia and Reece Carnes of this county. Deceased also leaves thirty-four grandchildren, fifty-eight great grandchildren and twenty-two great, great grandchildren.
Mrs. Carnes was a member of the Tabernacle Methodist church and interment was in the Taberncale cemetery. The following served as pallbearers, Crayton and R. G. Threatt, B. B. Plyler, C. H. Rowell, C. S. Shute and B. F. Snipes. Flower girls were Misses Thelma and Shirley Threatt, Jacintia and Mrs. Emory Carnes.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. G. T. Hughes with the Mackey Funeral home in charge.

Daughter-in-law Ellen Carnes is believed to be Ellen (Elleanor/Ellenda) Shute. Her obituary states that she first married (James) Alexander Threatt (son of Thomas Threatt). After her first husband died, Ellen Shute married John Wesley Carnes, near whom she was buried. The John W. Carnes to which the will of Thomas Threatt refers, was her second husband, John Wesley Carnes.
Text: Seventeen: I give and bequeath unto my daughter-in-law Ellen Carnes fifty ($50) dollars and if she be dead at the time of my decease then the said sum of Fifty dollars shall be paid to John W. Carnes.
