Notes: | Thomas W. Radcliffe was listed in the 1859 Directory of Columbia, South Carolina as proprietor of Radcliffe & Guignard, a watch and jewelry store at 166 Richardson St. The family was well placed in Columbia society and lived on Pendleton St. at the corner of Assembly, within view of the state capitol building which was shelled by Union troops during the Civil War. This Radcliffe family had been in Columbia since at least the 1840 census. Radcliffe's store may have been the source for a photo (carte de visite) album that his son, Charlie, gave to Maria Louisa "Lula" G. Feaster before leaving for service in the Confederacy. It seems likely that the personalized engraving on the latches of the album would be done at Radcliffe's store. Radcliffe had "sidelines in silverware, guns and military goods. As such, Radcliffe may have made, or had commissioned, several unit flags. Included in these are the flags of the Emmet Guards, Congaree Mounted Riflemen, and the Glen Springs Company, all of which were displayed for the public in his store." Radcliffe led Company A, "Columbia Rifles" of the 15th Rgt., South Carolina Infantry which was mustered into service at Lightwoodknot Springs in September of 1861. His son Charles C. Radcliffe and his friend Henry Orchard served in his unit, along with Capt. Radcliffe's elder sons Lewis and Thomas. The family faced tragedy in the coming years. Eldest son Thomas W. Radcliffe Jr. died in 1864 during the war in Virginia; Thomas Sr. died in 1870; and young son Jesse died in 1876. |
