Notes: | James J. Mackey (Mackay) was a New York-born gunsmith in Columbia, SC. By 1859, James J. Mackay was listed in the Columbia SC City Directory as a clerk (furniture store) with his house located: "south side Taylor between Sumter and Marion", about 4 blocks from the State capitol building. This home was on same block as Benjamin F. Rawls, a prominent man and grandfather of Mackey's wife. After the disruption of the Civil War and the destruction in Columbia, the Mackey family settled in Grove Station in rural Greenville Co., SC. Mackey's mother-in-law, Mary Rawls Bullard, lived with the family in 1850 and 1870. |
