Transcription also available online June 2002 on genealogy.com/Threatt message board, thanks to efforts of Gloria Stogner Cook and Carolyn Threatt. Text: The Pageland Journal, December 11, 1929.Mr. Miles Threatt, 98, known far and wide as the oldest man in Chesterfield County and among the oldest anywhere, died Thursday morning, December 5, about 7:45 in his home near Jefferson. Mr. Threatt had said that he wanted to be the last Confederate soldier to leave the earthly ranks and this wish was about the only one that was denied the old man, for his last days were smooth and happy. Cared for most diligently and lovingly by three daughters who made their home with him and looked up to [by] the stalwart sons and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. For many years Mr. Threatt's home had been a yearly mecca for hundreds of kindred friends, neighbors, and people from far away at the time of his annual birthday celebration. Living on a comfortable farm, abounding in all the food products necessary, for a heavily laden table, his family was always ready with bounding hospitality for the visitors who came to see him and on the birthday occasion when the neighbors and kindred added their baskets to the store, 500 to 1000 people would eat and leave many baskets full. Mr. Threatt had grown perceptibly feebler between his 97th and 98th birthday celebration, but at the later time on June 26 last, his faculties were all good, his mind clear, and his ability to get about, not greatly limited. He was a confederate soldier and had been severely wounded in the war. He was a man of smooth and even temper, had a well stored memory and had been a landmark for many years. Two years ago he added a large porch and additional rooms to his house, mainly for the purpose of furnishing better accomodations to the hundreds who gathered at his birthday celebration.Mr. G. W. Threatt, and Mr. O. J. Threatt of Jefferson and Mr. W. B. Threatt of Kershaw, are his sons, and Mrs. W. C. Middleton of Jefferson and Mrs. Hennie Lillie and Ellen Threatt are his daughters.Mr. Threatt was born in Anson County on June 26, 1831. He would have been 99 next June. He had lived in Chesterfield since before the Civil War. |
