Notes: | Per a photo in Lula Feaster's photo album, this was her "Uncle Jim". A notation by Cle Clowney Hall indicates he was "brother of Grand Pa Wolling; father of Marcia Wolling Shaw, also of Spencer Meredith Wolling". Rev. Wolling was one of several clergy who officiated at the Methodist funeral of eminent Gen. William Evans in June, 1876 in Marion Co., South Carolina. (Source: Obituary of Gen. Evans in The Southern Christian Advocate, 5 September1876 - - http://sciway3.net/proctor/marion/obits/evans002.html). He married his first wife, Lydia Green, in 1878. She died in Brazil in 1887. J.W. Wolling and J. M. Lander were Methodist missionaries who, in 1889 in Brazil, founded "Instituto Granbery da Igreja Metodista" in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais. See website: www.granbery.com.br. In this same year, Rev. Wolling married his second wife, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Morgan Rice. In the 1930 US census, J.W. Wolling's son Spencer Walling was 34, living in St. Louis, Missouri (name incorrectly reported as Walling Spencer) with wife Marjorie and son Spencer Walling, age 6. He listed his birthplace as Brazil, and year of immigration to the US as 1904, with native language English. This is evidence that 1903-1904 James William Wolling/Walling and family returned to the USA from their missionary work in Brazil. The Nashville Christian Advocate reported that Rev. Wolling returned to Brazil after a stay of 2 years in the USA, sailing from New York on January 30, 1905. James William Wolling is listed in the BGMI (Biography & Genealogy Master Index): Wolling, James William 1850-1928 The Encyclopedia of World Methodism. Two volumes. Edited by Nolan B. Harmon. Nashville, TN: United Methodist Publishing House, 1974. (EncWM) |
