Notes: | This is *not* the Susan Hough mentioned in Rev. Aaron Weaver Knight's Journal, who married Capt. Neil F. Graham. According to Lon D. Outen's "The Hortons of Lynches Creek...", that Susan Hough was the daughter of Lavinia Elliott. The confusion arises because both Lavinia Elliott (who was 2nd wife of Joseph Hough, father of Amos Hough) and her sister Louisa Lydia Elliott (who married Joseph Hough's son Amos) had daughters who were familiarly known as "Susan Hough". Per Outen, the Susan Hough who married Capt. Graham was buried next to her mother Lavinia Elliott Hough at Jack Horton Cemetery in Chesterfield Co, about 1/2 mi South of Rocky Creek near Angelus community. We found Louisa Lydia's daughter Susan Hough buried at Damascus (near Westville, SC) next to her husband Thomas Racine Horton. 1850 Census in Chesterfield Co., SC (p. 138a - 8 Nov 1850) lists in House #608 a Susannah Hough age 12 (born abt 1838) living in home of James (33, b. abt 1817) and Sarah Estridge (32, b. abt 1818). This Susannah Hough is believed to be dau of Amos Hough and Louisa Elliott. Evidence is: 1- Age of Susannah Hough in 1850 (12) is about correct for her birth in July 1837. 2- Sarah Estridge was born a Hough. She was a sister of Amos Hough, per researcher Frank Joyner (e-mail 2 Oct 2002), and therefore a dau of Joseph Hough and first wife Susanna Williams. Sarah was Susannah's aunt. 3- In the 1860 census, Susannah Hough (10 yrs older and married to Thomas R. Horton) continued to live in Estridge household. Records from Horton family show her as dau of Amos Hough and Louisa Elliott. The other Susan Hough (dau of ) married Capt. Neil F. Graham Mar 29, 1849 per Rev. Aaron Weaver Knight Journal. Note that neighbors in 1850 of House #608 in Chesterfield include: #607 Elliott: Isaac (age 32)+Winney (per Frank Joyner e-mail 2 Oct 2002: Isaac was brother of Lavinia and Louisa Lydia Elliott - - based on Granville D. Hough's "Descendants of Amos and Sarah (Bivens) Hough of North Carolina and South Carolina c1760-1997"); #609 Blakeney, #611 Graham: John, Mary, Neal (presumably Capt. Neil F. Graham) and (presumed wife) Susannah age 22. Rev. Knight lived nearby in house #615. 1860 Census in Kershaw Co., SC lists in House # 276 a Thomas Horton age 23, Laborer, and S. Horton (Susannah?) female age 23, with Amos Horton age 2 and J. P. Horton age 1, males, living in household of Jas Eastridge age 43 M, Planter, and Sarah (Hough??) Eastridge, 43, female. |
