Notes: | Was a Mason and Deacon in church. L.J. Jordan had the opportunity to know his 104-year-old grandmother, Priscilla (born about 1776), who lived with his family when L.J. was a teenager (1880 census). Had large amount of property, per information in his will. He established the first school in the area, also owned a mill south of modern-day Keys Rd. Was an accomplished beekeeper. L.J. Jordan travelled a great deal, especially to Louisiana where he established family ties. This may explain why he is difficult to locate as an adult in the US Censuses. L.J. Jordan died in Camden Hospital, Kershaw Co., South Carolina. |

Jordan Dies In Camden Hospital LeVander Jackson Jordan, 74, died Sunday morning, March 30, at 12:30 AM., at the Camden Hospital following a brief illness. Funeral Services were conducted on Monday Afternoon at 3 o'clock at his home near Westville by his pastor, the Rev. C. O. Shuler, assisted by the Rev. J. B. Caston, of Camden; the Rev. R.R. Tucker, of St.George and the Rev. L. D. Hamer, of Summerville. Masonic rites and interment followed at Kershaw Cemetery. Mr. Jordan is survived by his widow -the former Miss Emma Hilton, of Liberty Hill, and the following children by his first marriage to the late Mrs. Mary Threatt Jordan, of Jefferson; four daughters, Mrs H. H. Truesdale, of Kershaw; Mrs W.C. Horton, of Westville; Mrs. Rosa* C. Blackmon, of Taxahaw, and Mrs. Chalmers L. Young, of Columbia; four sons, Arthur Jordan, Caviette Jordan, and LeRoy Jordan all of Westville, and Paul G. Jordan, prominent Columbia electrical contractor. Thirty grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren also survive. Mr. Jordan, a pioneer plantation farmer of the Lockhart section of Kershaw county, since 1909, was born April 24, 1866 in Chesterfield County. For several years he traveled and was engaged in the mercantile business in Kershaw for twelve years before moving to the present home site near Westville, where he had become a prominent figure and highly esteemed by all who knew him. Text: L. J. Jordan Dies -- Kershaw, March 30. -- L. J. Jordan, 75, prominent planter of the Lockhart section of Kershaw county, died in the Camden hospital early this morning after an illness of about a week. Mr. Jordan was born in Chesterfield county, but moved to Kershaw in 1897, and entered the mercantile business, where he continued until 1911 when he moved to his farm where he has been successfully engaged ever since. In addition to his widow, Mrs. Emma Hilton Jordan, he is survived by the following children: Mrs. H. H. Truesdale, Mrs. W. C. Horton and Miss Marlow Burche Jordan, all of Kershaw; Mrs. C. R. Blackmon, Taxahaw; Mrs. C. L. Young and Paul Jordan of Columbia; A. S., C. W., and L. R. Jordan of Kershaw, 32 grandchildren. His first wife, Mrs. Mary Threatt Jordan, preceded him to the grave ten years ago. Funeral services will be conducted from the residence at 4:30 p.m. Monday afternoon by his pastor, the Rev. C. O. Shuler, assisted by the Rev. J. B. Caston of Camden, and the Rev. R. R. Tucker of St. George, and the Rev. L. D. Hamer of Sumerville. The Masons will have charge of services at the graveside in the Kershaw cemetery. |
