Columbia- Services for Chalmers Eben Young, 85, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Greenlawn Memorial Park with Rev. Dr. James St. John officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 this evening at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia. Memorials may be made to Berry College, Student Works Program, P.O. Box 69, Mount Berry, GA 30149.

Mr. Young, married for 54 years to the late Gladys McNair Young, died Friday October 19, 2001, at his home after a long illness. Born in Kershaw Co., he was the eldest son of the late Chalmers Landy and Minnie Jordan Young. A graduate of Berry College, he received a Masters Degree in Public School Administration from the University of South Carolina. He taught in the public schools of Winnsboro, Blaney and Richland County District Two. In 1942, he received a Master Teacher's Award. He was an assistant principal of Brookland Cayce Junor High School and principal of E.L. Wright Junior High School and Dentsville High School. Mr. Young served as the State Superintendent of Vocational Education. He was the founder of the Dentsville Volunteer Fire Department and Young's Hardware Store. He retired in 1982. He was a member of the South Carolina and National Teachers' Associations. He was a past president of the Northeast Lions Club and the Columbia Chapter of the Berrry College Alumni Association. Mr. Young served as Presbyterian Elder and was a member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his daughter, Barbara Young Morrison, Kathy Young Rowland, both of Columbia; sister, Loree Wrenn of Chapin; brothers, Paul "Dick" Young of Rembert, Sinway and Howard Young, both of Columbia. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Alice Goodale; grandchildren William "Lanny" and Kate Morrison, Erin and Alex Rowland, all of Columbia.
